Atelier began with a simple frustration: almost everything on the rail was designed to a price, not to a standard. The cloth was chosen last, the seams were single-stitched to save seconds, and the garment was quietly built to fail somewhere around its second season.

We work the other way round. We start at the mill, buy cloth we actually believe in, and then design something worth cutting it into. It means we make fewer pieces and we make them in smaller runs. It also means that when a garment leaves here, we are willing to stand behind it for years.

Where we make

Our knitwear is made in a family-run factory outside Porto that has been knitting for three generations. Our wool is woven in Biella, in northern Italy, and our cotton shirting comes from a mill in Japan that still runs shuttle looms. We visit each of them at least twice a year.

Sizing

We cut generously and consistently. If you are between sizes, size down for knitwear — it relaxes with wear — and size up for outerwear if you plan to layer. Every product page lists the garment measurements flat, not just a body-size chart.

Shipping

Orders ship within two business days. Standard shipping is a flat $12, and it is complimentary on orders over $200. Express options are offered at checkout. We ship worldwide; duties for orders outside the US are calculated at checkout so nothing arrives with a surprise bill.

Returns

Thirty days, unworn, with tags attached, for a full refund. Return shipping is free within the US. If something fails in a way it should not have — a seam, a button, a zip — write to us regardless of when you bought it, and we will repair or replace it.

Garment care

Wash less than you think you need to. Wool and linen air out beautifully overnight; a heavy cotton tee is fine after two or three wears. When you do wash, use cold water and a wool-safe detergent, and dry flat. The single fastest way to ruin good cloth is a hot tumble dryer.
